Newspapers are wonderful sources and should not be missed! In contrast, small country or community newspapers were concerned with local people and their immediate surroundings and are often rich in genealogical and historical information. While newspapers created in large cities were most often concerned with international, national, and state affairs they can contain valuable information about local individuals and should not be passed over. These types of details are not likely to appear on a marriage record at the local courthouse. For example, a newspaper account of a marriage might indicate that it took place at the home of the bride's parents, perhaps even naming them it might list the occupation of the groom, or indicate that the ceremony was part of a double wedding in which the bride's sister was also married. Additionally, because newspapers are unofficial sources, even when they merely supplement the public records, they can provide much incidental information that is simply not recorded anywhere else. Newspapers are not restricted to or bound by the regulations or forms used by more "official" sources. For example, an obituary may have appeared in a newspaper even when civil death records did not exist. Newspapers can also provide at least a partial substitute for nonexistent civil records. They act almost as a diary for events that took place in a certain locality.īecause newspapers are generally geographic in scope they are not limited to governmental jurisdictions therefore, they can include such things as the report of a wedding of local citizens, even when it occurred in a neighboring county or even another state. Newspapers record the day-to-day or even week-to-week happenings of local community events. Newspapers are intended for general readers, usually serve a geographic region, and may also be oriented toward a particular ethnic, cultural, social, or political group. They supply all sorts of clues about vital statistics (birth, marriage, and death announcements), obituaries, local news, biographical sketches, legal notices, immigration, migration, and shipping information and other historical items that place our ancestors in the context of the society in which they lived. Newspapers can be used to find valuable genealogical information about historical events in the lives of our ancestors. Check the local library or historical society in the area in which your ancestors lived for more information about other available newspapers. The date range represented in this database is not necessarily the complete published set available. ![]() Over time, the name of a newspaper may have changed and the time span it covered may not always be consistent. The images for this newspaper can be browsed sequentially, or via links to specific images, which may be obtained through the search results. The accuracy of the index varies according to the quality of the original images. The newspapers can be browsed or searched using a computer-generated index. This database is a fully searchable text version of the newspaper for the following years: 1862-63. The Norwalk Reflector newspaper was located in Norwalk, Ohio. ![]()

![]() ![]() In my fridge is the intent of someone who wants to be healthy (whatever that means), who wants to do their part for the planet, and be compassionate toward all living beings. ![]() But also more agency, reflected in the smaller number of half-empty sauces, and the careful attentiveness in making sure nothing is wasted. My fridge is a little emptier these days, a sign of living with less-less people, less money. So my fridge no longer houses animal products, a staple of my childhood that I eagerly let go of. ![]() I grew up loving animals, yet it took 22 years for me to try and do something about the fact that billions of them suffer intensely and unecessarily for us humans to have our choice of cut, or our brief moments of pleasure. I’ve always had a refrigerator-what does that say about my privilege, and about the magical ability to preserve food for weeks or months that I grew up taking for granted? In my fridge today, gone are the deli meats and 2% milks of childhood. I’ll share this one in full, as its arc is a bit more coherent:Ī lot has changed about the refrigerators in my life. So it’s only right that I wrote about different mental snapshots of the inside of a refrigerator. This prompt brought on a mild panic when the timer started as my mind frantically searched for something meaningful that would seem deep and elicit “mmm”s if I were to share it. What has changed about it now since your first encounter with that place? What is now missing? Imagine a recent photograph or scene of a place you know well. Part II: The Present, embracing grief and loss. What comes to the surface? Was it what you expected? Give part I a try-first for twelve minutes, and then with a bit of reflection. That tree was a loyal companion in retrospect, and I hope they’ll forgive my landscaping efforts. Drenched t-shirts, metallic drinks from the hose, and the bowls of Honey Nut Cheerios that followed in an attempt to recover from the deep-seated fatigue of self-imposed training after the more formal practices or games that had taken place earlier in the day. It makes me want to move…Ī couple days removed from the workshop, what most viscerally comes to mind when I think about basketball, childhood, and the lifetimes spent in my backyard-imagination on full blast as I celebrated with teammates made of air or cursed the wind out loud for blowing my game-winning shot off course-is sweat. ![]() And like I said, he seems to be really into these odd movements with the round thing. It’s nice having consisent non-tree company, though. I feel like I was here first, but these human people seem to only care when something’s in their way. So much so that he’s cut off one of my branches before so he had more space to throw it without hitting me. …he seems to really care about this round thing and the circle with a net attached to it. A few lines from my hurried jotting went like this: I took that as a sign and rode the momentum, attempting to embody a tree next to my backyard basketball hoop that was always littering the small court with fallen debris and getting in the way of my baseline jumpshots. What came to mind (again, quite unexpectedly) was the word basketball. Alternatively, write about a place that makes you feel like a child again.Īs we introduced ourselves before we dove into the first prompt, we had to give a word that comes to mind when we think of home. ![]() ![]() That's despite the fact that you never ever need to oil it or replace the self-sharpening blades. It goes through even wiry neck hair with ease, edges neatly, yet there's never any danger of being cut or suffering irritation. Needless to say, this is utterly useless, so let's ignore that and press on to the non-headline features.įor shorter beards (up to 7mm), there's nothing to beat the 9000 Series. ![]() The headline feature here is an actual laser, which projects onto your face so you can cut extra straight lines in your beard. And yes, admittedly the battery did eventually die (it now only works when the power cable is plugged in, although that in itself is a feature that some trimmers lack), but we can't really fault it for the price. Our lifestyle editor has had one of these for 5 years and used it – usually in the shower – multiple times per week. That's because rather than having an integral, adjustable comb for different lengths, they use interchangeable combs. The hardware of the non-'Pro' versions does have more of a tendency to wear out, however. There are a number of versions of the OneBlade available at Amazon and elsewhere, and particularly if you suffer from facial irritation, they are all excellent. We'd say it is suited to shorter trims on the whole – it's most ideal for those who favour neither beards nor a smooth visage: it does perma-stubble brilliantly. The battery runs for 90 minutes on a one-hour charge and it can handle beards up to 10mm via its adjustable comb head. The dual-sided blade is designed to cut more precisely than a comb and we find they last about 6 weeks to 3 months before needing to be replaced. That's somewhat less than Philips' claim of 4 months, but the replacement heads aren't especially pricey or hard to find. You'll want to stand near the sink, use it in the shower, or keep a cordless vac nearby, mind: as we found the way the head vibrates sends cut stubble all over the place. The main selling point here is the absence of razor burn: if you’ve found other trimmers leave your face a fiery red, we think you will find the OneBlade considerably more gentle. The Philips OneBlade is an odd-looking thing, with what appears to be a large Mach 3-style blade instead of the familiar cutting comb (although with the Pro models you get a cutting comb too). Keep on top of blade maintenance (oiling them after cleaning) and this is one trimmer you won't be throwing in the bin after a few months of heavy use.īefore you buy, be sure to check our Philips discount codes to bag the best deal. Yes, it's pricey for a beard trimmer, but it feels premium and like it's built to last. The easy flip-back shaving head also makes rinsing out any fine hairs really easy, as there's no fiddling around trying to clip a cheap plastic head back on. We found the battery life is excellent too, and the 'power sensor adaptor' automatically adjusts the speed of the motor depending on how hard it works, allowing it to plough through longer sections without getting bogged down like cheaper trimmers we've tried.Īlthough we wouldn't recommend submerging it in a bubbly bath, it is supposedly 100-percent waterproof and performed perfectly well when we tested it in the shower. That steel cutting head is brilliantly contoured, thanks to “anti-friction skin follower” technology, and managed to get into those awkward or hard-to-reach areas where many rivals fall down. There's a robust steel dial that quickly adjusts the blade length from 0.4mm to 5mm, or throw on a plastic guard and cover the 5.4mm to 10mm lengths.ĭesigned primarily with neater beard-scaping in mind, it neatly whips away whiskers without any snags or pulls. ![]() Thankfully, the BT9000 Prestige isn't just a looker, because in our review we found it offers an equally classy shave. ![]() ![]() ![]() And please, for the love of Arceus, don’t make your main antagonist look like a discount Funko Pop again. If I were a Psychic- or Fairy-type ‘mon, I’d definitely be making a Wish or two for the inevitable Gen 5 remakes to learn from BDSP’s many mistakes. The newly revised editions eschew this originality for a tonally dissonant chibi aesthetic and a structure young children would even consider juvenile – that’s not to mention an egregious ignorance of Platinum, which we’ll discuss a bit more later on.īrilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl are still great RPGs, and even their most brazen offenses are mostly innocuous – but they embody everything Pokémon shouldn’t be going forward. Sinnoh is an exceptional region with great characters and inspired creature design, but part of what made the original Gen 4 games so special was how different they felt from previous adventures in this universe. While the original games fare much better on this list, BDSP is guilty of what is traditionally seen as Pokémon’s most enduring issue: a total fear of innovation. It might seem a little controversial to call the most recent Pokémon game the worst one, but a) Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl truly do mark the series’ weakest point to date, and b) sorry folks, we’re taking no prisoners here. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl ![]() Want to know which game is the very best, like no one ever was? Here’s every mainline Pokémon game ever released, ranked. ![]() New Pokémon Snap in particular would probably outrank about three-quarters of the mainline list, which consists of games from officially numbered generations including new releases, enhanced editions, and remakes, amassing 19 entries in total. You won’t find Mystery Dungeon or New Pokémon Snap here, although you should still go and play them if you have any interest whatsoever in magical creatures claw-punching one another. We’re just willing to lend an ear to any naysayers.Īnyway, here’s our ranking of every Pokémon game – the mainline ones, at least. We’re not saying we will rerank the entries (we won’t). Again, even the worst game on this list is excellent in its own right – we’re not calling your favorite terrible by ranking it lower than a game we like better, and we’re more than open to have a chat if you’d like to make your case for a rerank. Aside from the fact that everyone and their granny knows which ‘mon says “pika pika,” Nintendo’s iconic catch-’em-up has been consistently excellent for over 25 years – while certain entries are stronger than others, there’s no such thing as a ‘bad’ Pokémon game.īecause we’re human beings, however, and therefore love to think about how one thing is better than another thing but worse than a totally different thing, it seems only natural that we should set ourselves the colossal undertaking of officially ranking every mainline Pokémon game since Red & Blue. Pokémon is one of the most universally beloved video game series in history, and for good reason. ![]() |
